But back at Lookout Beach, even Luke’s friendly smile didn’t take my mind off what had happened.

“Piper!” he said, directing that mega-watt grin at me. “What are you doing here? Not that I’m complaining, I was getting lonely.”

There were three desks in the office, and two of them were empty. Luke was the only one there.

I explained about the rescue.

“Piper, that’s awesome!” Luke got up and high-fived me in congratulations. “I’ll buy you a soda later to celebrate.”

On any other day, the thought of having a soda with Luke would have sent me into a happy daydream. But all I could think about was Kevin and his stupid cell phone.

“What can I do to help?” I asked, hoping for something that would take my mind off things.

“Here in the main office, we’re doing exciting lifeguard things like filing,” Luke joked, putting on a serious voice.

“Sounds like fun,” I deadpanned. I didn’t care if I would be filing or scrubbing the floor with a toothbrush.

“My dad refuses to join the digital world and get a scanner,” Luke complained. “All of our files are stored in here.” He gestured toward two large file cabinets that stood side by side. “And he likes to keep every scrap of paper, ‘just in case,’ he always says.”

I got to work filing, but it was just so tedious. I would rather have been scrubbing kayaks, but I worked away on a giant pile of papers, wanting to get it over with so I could go home. I’d had enough of lifeguarding today.

I tried to concentrate, but my mind kept drifting back to Kevin and the dirty looks he had given me. What would he do if I told? Would he hate me? Would he tell all the other lifeguards, and would they hate me too?

“Piper! What’s wrong? You’ve sighed like twenty times in a row. You don’t seem like yourself,” Luke called from his desk.

“I don’t know what to do!” I wailed. I bit my lower lip to keep myself from saying anything else.

Luke came over, his eyes concerned. “About what? Tell me. You can trust me, Piper.”

His blue eyes, usually twinkling with laughter, looked so serious and kind, I felt myself wanting to confide in him. It all came pouring out.

“Kevin’s been using his phone when he’s on duty.” The words came out in a rush. “That’s why I saw the toddler almost drown today and he didn’t. He was texting.”

Luke’s eyes widened. “For real? Kevin? He should know better!”

“Your dad was really mad at him for not reacting before I did. Bud didn’t know why, but I did. I was going to say something to your dad, but Kevin gave me a look. I know it sounds stupid, but it was so intimidating, I just couldn’t talk. I just didn’t know what to do.”

“Piper, this is really serious. You should tell my dad,” Luke urged.

I felt my stomach tighten at the thought of Kevin finding out I had ratted on him. I didn’t want everyone to think I was some kind of goody-goody snitch.
